Works by L. I. Akselrod

Articles, Reviews and Books with Material by L. I. Akselrod (Ortodoks)

This bibliography is a work in progress. Since Liubov Akselrod died a natural death in 1946, she was not erased from Soviet history. Her close association with G. V. Plekhanov, however, complicated her standing in the Soviet Union. Stalin’s hostility to a study of this early Marxist theoretician’s heritage made it difficult to investigate fully the life and works of Plekhanov’s closest associates. In addition, as one after another of Akselrod’s friends and acquaintances fell victim to the Great Terror of 1936-1938, publication of her work virtually ceased. She did, however, survive; we do not know what works, if any, she wrote between her last published article in 1936 and her death ten years later.

To this day, there is no full-length biography or bibliography of L. I. Akselrod. Fortunately, Akselrod’s career was celebrated in the mid-1920s, and a bibliography of her works to that point was published in a small booklet. That publication provides over half the items in this bibliography.
